Over the years, factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity take their toll on a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and firmness and begin to sag. A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. The best candidate for breast augmentation is someone who is healthy both physically and emotionally and is looking for improvement, not perfection. The best results are usually achieved in women with small, sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy breasts.
In your initial consultation, Dr. Mukerji will examine your breasts and measure them while they are sitting or standing. He will discuss the variables that may affect the procedure – age, size and shape of breasts, and the condition of your skin. He will also discuss the positioning of your nipple and areola and which technique – anchor incision or a modified incision such as the doughnut – will give you the best results. If your breasts are small or lost volume, breast implants can be placed at the same time as a breast lift to increase size and firmness.
Depending on your age and family history, you may be required to have a mammogram prior to surgery. The surgery is a same day surgery done under general anesthesia and lasts about one and one-half hours to two hours. Recovery is usually another 2-3 hours, depending on your needs, before you are discharged home. You should be able to return to work in one week depending on the level of activity required for your job.
A breast lift is not considered medically necessary and is not covered by medical insurance.

Breast Lift Consultation
Plan to spend 30 minutes to one hour at your initial consultation with Dr. Mukerji. During this consultation, you will discuss your surgery goals, your plastic surgery options and go over the risks and benefits involved with your surgery. Your decision to have surgery is a highly personal one that not everyone will understand. The important thing is how you feel about it.
Prior to your consultation, make a list of questions. Many things will be covered during your consultation and it is easy to forget all the questions you had. Be sure to let us know if you smoke, the medications you take including vitamins, and any other health problems. Be aware that smoking causes the blood vessels to constrict which reduces blood flow, and the oxygen it carries, to the surgical area. When your blood supply is reduced, tissues heal more slowly and there is an increased risk of complications. If you smoke, Dr. Mukerji will let you know if you need to quit smoking prior to your surgery and for how long. If you are required to quit smoking prior to surgery, a nicotine test will be administered on the morning of your surgery.
Typically, most of our surgeries are performed in Newbury Park, CA under general anesthesia.
