Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck , is a surgical procedure to correct a protruding or loose, sagging abdomen. Areas to be treated may include the center of the abdomen (mini-tummy tuck) or may extend to the entire area between the lower rib cage and pubic bone as well as to the sides and back. A tummy tuck removes unwanted fat, tissues, and skin by excision along with correcting weakened or separated abdominal muscles. This surgery should not be a substitute for weight loss or an appropriate exercise plan. The best results are obtained when a candidate is currently participating in a consistent exercise plan but cannot get rid of the excess skin in their abdomen. No amount of exercise will correct this problem. Your skin has lost its elasticity and cannot “snap back” to a toned appearance. The results can be affected by significant weight fluctuations.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Mukerji will evaluate your health and discuss the type of tummy tuck that will provide you with the best results. He will also explain the position of your scars. While there are scars, they are hidden by most clothes and swimsuits. The best candidate for a tummy tuck is a man or woman of any age who is in good health, is a nonsmoker, have a positive outlook and specific, realistic goals.
The surgery is performed at the hospital under general anesthesia and lasts between 2 and 3 hours depending on the amount of tissue being removed. You will be required to spend one night in the hospital. You may be able to return to work after two weeks depending on the requirements of your job and your recovery.
In most circumstances, a tummy tuck is not considered medically necessary and is not covered by medical insurance.
